Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs)

helping you safely return to work

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive performance-based assessment designed to measure an individual’s ability to perform work-related tasks. At Ergo Rehab, our licensed physical therapists conduct FCEs using evidence-based protocols that evaluate strength, endurance, flexibility, postural tolerance, cardiovascular conditioning, and material handling capabilities.

why FCEs and What to Expect

FCEs are commonly used in workers’ compensation cases, return-to-work decisions, disability evaluations, and pre-vocational planning. The goal is to provide objective data that helps determine whether an injured worker can return to their previous job, requires modifications, or may need vocational rehabilitation.

What to Expect:

  • FCEs typically last between 3–4 hours

  • Tasks simulate the physical demands of the patient’s actual job

  • Evaluates lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balance, and functional mobility

  • Postural tolerances (sitting, standing, kneeling, climbing) are assessed

  • Pain behaviors and consistency of effort are monitored and reported
